Labor Time Estimator

Estimate how long a DIY task will take. Pick the task, enter the size, and choose your skill level for an hours estimate.

Estimated Labor Time
hours
Active work; add prep and drying.

Usage Tip

Whatever you estimate, pad it — real projects hit surprises. Track your actual time on the first section to calibrate the rest of the job.

THE MATH
Base hours = (quantity ÷ 100) × hours per 100 units
Adjusted hours = base hours × skill factor
Experienced ×0.8, intermediate ×1.0, first-timer ×1.6
These are rough hands-on estimates per 100 sq ft (or per 100 linear feet for trim), before setup, cleanup, and drying time.
Skill level matters a lot — a first-timer can take well over double a pro on the same task.
Estimates cover active work only — add prep, masking, cleanup, and waiting for coats or adhesive to cure, which can equal the hands-on time.
Break big jobs into sessions; fatigue slows you down and raises mistakes late in a long day.
If a task needs special tools or skills you do not have, the learning curve adds hours — factor that in or hire it out.
