Feed per revolution converts spindle RPM and a chosen feed-per-rev value into the linear feed rate (IPM) used for turning, drilling, and reaming operations.
How it works
Unlike milling, where feed is programmed per tooth across multiple flutes, single-point turning tools and most drills and reamers are programmed per spindle revolution. This ties the feed rate directly to how far the tool advances each time the spindle turns once, regardless of the tool’s cutting-edge count. A quick way to sanity-check the result: feed rate in IPM divided by RPM should always equal back the feed-per-revolution value you started with.
FAQ
Is feed per revolution the same as chip load? Not quite. Chip load usually refers to feed per tooth on multi-flute milling tools, while feed per revolution is the equivalent concept for single-edge or per-revolution-fed operations like turning and drilling.
