MEASUREMENT CONVERSIONS

Convert between cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, fluid ounces, and milliliters – for example cups to tablespoons, teaspoons to milliliters, or fluid ounces to cups. Switch between the US and metric cup to match your recipe.

Usage Tip

For dry ingredients, weighing in grams is more accurate than measuring by volume.

THE MATH
amount × (unit volume in ml) ÷ (target unit in ml)
1 US cup = 236.59 ml · 1 metric cup = 250 ml · 1 tbsp = 14.79 ml · 1 tsp = 4.93 ml · 1 fl oz = 29.57 ml
Volumes use US tablespoons and teaspoons. The cup standard toggle switches only the cup between US (236.59 ml) and metric (250 ml).

Volume measurements at a glance

How volume units stack up1 cup16 tbsp48 tsp1 cup = 16 tablespoons = 48 teaspoons

A cup is a fixed volume, so it always holds the same number of tablespoons and teaspoons – no matter what is in it.

Volume is not weight. These conversions work for any liquid or for volume-to-volume. To turn cups into grams you also need the ingredient density – use the Grams to Cups or Ingredient Weight converter for that.

Most common conversions

Cups to tablespoons

1 cup = 16 tablespoons. So 1/2 cup = 8 tbsp, 1/3 cup ≈ 5 1/3 tbsp, and 1/4 cup = 4 tbsp.

Tablespoons to teaspoons

1 tablespoon = 3 teaspoons. Half a tablespoon is 1 1/2 tsp – handy when a recipe only gives one of the two.

Cups to milliliters

1 US cup = 236.59 ml; a metric cup is 250 ml. So 1/2 US cup ≈ 118 ml and 1/4 cup ≈ 59 ml.

Fluid ounces to cups

8 fl oz = 1 cup, so 4 fl oz = 1/2 cup and 1 fl oz = 1/8 cup. These are fluid (volume) ounces, not weight ounces.

Liters to cups

1 liter = 4.23 US cups, or exactly 4 metric cups. So 500 ml is about 2.1 US cups.

US vs metric vs imperial cups

Cup typeVolume
US customary cup236.59 ml
Metric cup (AU, NZ, EU)250 ml
Imperial cup (old UK)284 ml

Recipes from different countries use different cups. The gap is small per cup but adds up across a recipe and matters most in baking. Use the cup standard toggle in the calculator above to match the recipe you are following.
