Revolutions per mile come straight from the tire’s overall diameter: a smaller tire spins more times to cover the same mile, which raises engine RPM at a given speed and makes a speedometer read high. Tire RPM at speed is how fast the wheel itself turns. If you do not know your overall diameter, decode it from the tire size first. Use the loaded (rolling) diameter for the most accurate result.

What Revolutions per Mile Tells You

Revolutions per mile is how many times a tire rotates to travel one mile, and it depends only on the tire’s overall diameter. It is the number that links tire size to engine RPM, speedometer accuracy, and how your gearing feels. A taller tire turns fewer times per mile and effectively raises your gearing; a shorter tire does the opposite.

Tire RPM and Speed

Tire RPM is simply how fast the wheel spins at a given road speed. It scales with both speed and revolutions per mile, so the same speed produces higher tire RPM on a smaller tire. This matters for wheel-speed sensors, hub and bearing life, and for understanding how a gear change interacts with tire size.

The Speedometer Connection

Your speedometer counts wheel rotations and assumes a fixed tire diameter. Fit a tire that is taller than stock and the speedometer reads low; fit a shorter one and it reads high. The helper shows the indicated versus true speed so you can judge whether a tire change needs a speedometer recalibration.

Where do I get my tire diameter?

Decode it from the tire size with a tire size calculator, or measure the loaded height from ground to axle center and double it for the rolling diameter.

Why does a smaller tire raise engine RPM?

It rotates more times per mile, so at the same speed the driveline and engine turn faster. That can hurt fuel economy but improve acceleration.

Does tire pressure change revs per mile?

Slightly. Lower pressure reduces the rolling diameter a little, nudging revs per mile up. For planning, the nominal diameter is close enough.
