How much wood glue do I need?
Glue is sold by the bottle, not the square foot, so the real question is how many bottles to grab. Work out the area of the joint surface, multiply by the spread rate for your glue, and convert that to bottles. A typical PVA wood glue covers about 250 sq ft per gallon spread on one face, which works out to roughly half an ounce per square foot. This calculator does that math and then tells you what to actually buy — one 32 oz bottle, say, rather than 11.7 fluid ounces nobody sells.

Coverage assumes a normal spread on one mating face. Thirsty joints and end grain use more; a light edge joint uses less.

Different adhesives spread differently. Polyurethane foams and needs less; construction adhesive lays a heavy bead and uses far more.

Glue coverage for table tops
A panel glue-up is a row of edge joints. Add up the length of every seam and multiply by the board thickness to get the glued area. A 4 ft long top from five boards has four seams, so about 16 linear feet of joint at 3/4 in — roughly 1 sq ft of glue surface, well under a single 8 oz bottle. Bigger or thicker tops climb from there.
Glue coverage for cutting boards
Cutting boards stack many narrow strips, so the seam count is high even on a small board. An edge-grain board with a dozen feet of glue line at strip thickness still fits inside an 8 oz bottle; end-grain boards, glued twice across more surface, use noticeably more.

A little squeeze-out confirms full coverage, but excess just makes cleanup harder and does not add strength. Aim for a thin, even film.
How long do I clamp wood glue?
Most PVA glues need about 30 minutes of clamp time and 24 hours for a full cure before stressing the joint.
What glue is strongest for woodworking?
A good PVA joint is stronger than the wood itself. Choose by conditions: Titebond III or polyurethane for moisture, epoxy for gaps.
