Usage Tip
Apply a thin even film to both surfaces and clamp until you see a light squeeze-out bead; too much glue just makes cleanup harder.
Edge-to-edge glue-ups coat both faces, single-face joints use less, and mortise-and-tenon joints use more for the extra surface.
How much wood glue do I need?
Glue is sold by the bottle, not the square foot, so the real question is how many bottles to grab. Work out the area of the joint surface, multiply by the spread rate for your glue, and convert that to bottles. A typical PVA wood glue covers about 250 sq ft per gallon spread on one face, which works out to roughly half an ounce per square foot. This calculator does that math and then tells you what to actually buy — one 32 oz bottle, say, rather than 11.7 fluid ounces nobody sells.
Wood glue coverage per bottle
Coverage assumes a normal spread on one mating face. Thirsty joints and end grain use more; a light edge joint uses less.
| Bottle size | Approx coverage (PVA) |
|---|---|
| 8 oz | about 16 sq ft |
| 16 oz | about 32 sq ft |
| 32 oz | about 64 sq ft |
| 1 gallon | about 250 sq ft |
Titebond and glue type coverage
Different adhesives spread differently. Polyurethane foams and needs less; construction adhesive lays a heavy bead and uses far more.
| Glue | Spread rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Titebond Original (PVA) | ~250 sq ft/gal | The woodworking standard |
| Titebond II | ~250 sq ft/gal | Water resistant |
| Titebond III | ~225 sq ft/gal | Waterproof, slightly thicker |
| Polyurethane | ~300 sq ft/gal | Foams and expands; use sparingly |
| Epoxy | ~200 sq ft/gal | Gap filling, two-part |
| Construction adhesive | heavy bead | Sold by the tube, not spread |
Glue coverage for table tops
A panel glue-up is a row of edge joints. Add up the length of every seam and multiply by the board thickness to get the glued area. A 4 ft long top from five boards has four seams, so about 16 linear feet of joint at 3/4 in — roughly 1 sq ft of glue surface, well under a single 8 oz bottle. Bigger or thicker tops climb from there.
Glue coverage for cutting boards
Cutting boards stack many narrow strips, so the seam count is high even on a small board. An edge-grain board with a dozen feet of glue line at strip thickness still fits inside an 8 oz bottle; end-grain boards, glued twice across more surface, use noticeably more.
How joint type changes glue usage
| Joint | Glue demand |
|---|---|
| Edge / panel glue-up | Standard, one mating face |
| Face grain / laminated | High — large flat area |
| Mortise and tenon | Above average — walls and cheeks |
| Dovetail | High — many small faces |
| Pocket hole | Minimal — mostly mechanical |
Frequently asked questions
How much glue for a table top glue-up?
Add the length of all seams and multiply by board thickness for the glued area, then about half an ounce per square foot. Most tops need well under one 16 oz bottle.
How many square feet does a bottle of wood glue cover?
Roughly 16 sq ft for 8 oz, 32 for 16 oz, 64 for 32 oz and about 250 for a gallon, spread on one face.
Do I spread glue on both surfaces?
For most edge joints one face is enough if you get full coverage. End grain and thirsty woods benefit from a coat on both, which doubles the usage.
Is it better to use too much glue?
A little squeeze-out confirms full coverage, but excess just makes cleanup harder and does not add strength. Aim for a thin, even film.
How long do I clamp wood glue?
Most PVA glues need about 30 minutes of clamp time and 24 hours for a full cure before stressing the joint.
What glue is strongest for woodworking?
A good PVA joint is stronger than the wood itself. Choose by conditions: Titebond III or polyurethane for moisture, epoxy for gaps.

Estimates are for planning. Actual glue use depends on spread technique, wood porosity, end grain, joint fit and squeeze-out; buy a little extra and follow the glue manufacturer guidance for open time, clamp time and cure.
