OD turning time estimates cycle time for an outside-diameter turning pass from cut length, feed rate, approach distance, and number of passes.
How it works
Approach (overtravel) distance accounts for the tool clearing the part before engaging and after finishing the cut; leaving this out understates actual cycle time. Multiplying by number of passes accounts for roughing followed by one or more finishing passes at the same length. Cycle time scales linearly with number of passes, so cutting a rough pass and two finish passes at the same length roughly triples the estimated time versus a single pass, which is useful for comparing a one-pass versus multi-pass strategy before committing to a program.
FAQ
How much approach distance should I add? 0.050 to 0.100 in is typical for a rigid clearance move on most CNC lathes; add more if your program includes a chamfer lead-in or a slower approach feed before full engagement.
