Convert fabric weight from grams per square metre to ounces per square yard.
1 oz/yd\u00b2 = 33.906 gsm.
Fabric weight is given in grams per square meter in most of the world and in ounces per square yard in the United States. One ounce per square yard equals about 33.9 grams per square meter, so you divide the gsm by 33.9 to get ounces. A fabric of 200 gsm is about 5.9 ounces per square yard.
Weight is a guide to how a fabric behaves. Jersey knits for T shirts are often 140 to 180 gsm, quilting cotton is around 120 to 150, and heavy denim can be 340 gsm or more, which is 10 ounces and up.
Heavier fabrics are warmer, drape more stiffly, and are harder to sew, and lighter fabrics are cooler and softer but can be sheer. The weight is only one part of the picture, since the weave or knit and the fiber change the feel too.
Check what the number refers to when you read a listing, since some sellers give weight per linear yard at a particular width, which is not the same as per square yard. Use the conversion to compare fabrics from different shops and countries.
