Common Drink Sizes

Drink servings are not all the same size. This chart lists the standard pours so you can plan batches and track intake.

Drink Standard serving
Espresso shot 1 oz (30 ml)
Coffee mug 8 to 12 oz
Tea cup 6 to 8 oz
Wine pour 5 oz
Beer 12 oz
Cocktail 3 to 5 oz
Soda can 12 oz
Water glass 8 oz
A coffee cup is not 8 oz. Coffee makers rate a cup at 5 to 6 oz, not the 8 oz measuring cup. That is why a 12-cup pot fills about eight mugs.

FAQ

Why do standard drink sizes matter for caffeine tracking? Caffeine content is usually reported per standard serving, not per specific cup, so comparing a larger coffee to a smaller standard serving without adjusting for size will overstate or understate actual caffeine intake. For most home brewing, a standard measuring cup is 6 ounces of water, not the 8-ounce cup used in general cooking, which trips up a lot of home brewers.
