Fabric Weight Calculator

FABRIC

Weigh a swatch of fabric and enter its size to find the fabric weight in GSM (grams per square meter) and ounces per square yard.

Weight (GSM)
oz per sq yard
GSM = grams divided by area in square meters. Ounces per square yard = GSM times 0.0295.

How it works

Fabric weight is mass per area. Convert the swatch dimensions to meters, multiply for the area, and divide the weight by it to get GSM. A larger swatch gives a more accurate reading than a tiny scrap.

Bigger swatch, better reading. A 20 by 20 cm swatch on an accurate gram scale gives a reliable GSM. Very small scraps magnify weighing errors.
