Deep Hole Drilling Calculator

DRILLING

Deep-hole drilling calculator flags when a hole’s depth-to-diameter ratio requires peck-drilling technique, and works out the peck cycle from hole depth, drill diameter, peck increment, and feed rate.

Depth-to-Diameter Ratio—
Number of Pecks—
Estimated Cycle Time—
Ratios above 4:1 are generally considered deep-hole drilling requiring peck cycles.

How it works

As depth-to-diameter ratio grows, chip evacuation and coolant delivery to the cutting edge both get harder, raising the risk of chip packing, heat buildup, and drill breakage. Ratios beyond roughly 4:1 are generally treated as deep-hole territory requiring peck cycles or specialized tooling rather than a single continuous plunge.

FAQ

What peck increment should I use for deep holes? A common starting point is a peck depth equal to 1 to 3 times the drill diameter, retracting further out of the hole as depth-to-diameter ratio increases, to fully clear chips rather than just breaking them.
