Gauge Formula

Gauge is how many stitches and rows fall in a set measure, usually 4 inches (10 cm). It is the key to making a knit or crochet piece come out the right size.

Stitches = Width × (G ÷ 4)

What the terms mean

Symbol Meaning
Stitches Stitches to cast on
Width Desired width, in inches
G Gauge, stitches per 4 in

Worked example

At a gauge of 20 stitches per 4 in, a 20 in wide piece needs 20 × (20 ÷ 4) = 100 stitches.

Swatch first. Always knit or crochet a gauge swatch and measure it. Even half a stitch per inch off adds up to inches across a garment.
