Gauge a pattern\u2019s difficulty from a few factors.
A quick guide only \u2014 clear instructions can make a “hard” pattern feel easy.
This estimator combines a few factors, such as how many different stitch or technique types a pattern uses, how often the colors change, and how complicated the shaping is, to give a rough idea of how hard a project will be. It is a guide and not a rating, because difficulty also depends on your own experience and how patient you are with new techniques.
Published patterns are often labeled beginner, easy, intermediate, or experienced, and these labels are not always consistent between designers. Read the whole pattern before you buy yarn, look for techniques you have not used, and find a tutorial for each one. If a project feels too hard, a small practice swatch of the tricky stitch can show whether it is within reach.
Choosing something a little above your current skill is a good way to improve, as long as you allow extra time and yarn for mistakes and starting over. Simple shaping with a few techniques is a gentle step up, while lots of color changes in a row can slow a project down more than you expect.
