Feed Rate Formula

Feed rate is how fast the table moves, in inches per minute. It is built from the chip each tooth should take, how many teeth there are, and how fast the spindle turns.

Feed (IPM) = RPM × chip load × flutes

What the variables mean

Symbol Meaning
IPM Feed rate (inches per minute)
RPM Spindle speed
Chip load Feed per tooth (inches)
Flutes Number of cutting edges

Worked example

At 2,292 RPM, 0.003 in chip load, 4 flutes: Feed = 2292 × 0.003 × 4 = 27.5 IPM.
