Upholstery Fabric Calculator

Rough yardage to reupholster, by surface area.

A planning estimate only \u2014 pattern repeats, railroading and complex shapes increase yardage.

Practical Notes

Upholstery yardage depends on the surface area to cover, the width of the fabric, and how much is lost to waste. Dividing the area by the amount of fabric in a yard gives the number of yards. A yard of 54 inch fabric covers 13.5 square feet, so 40 square feet with 20 percent waste is 48 square feet, which needs about 3.6 yards.

This is a rough estimate, since real furniture has curves, seams, and pieces that do not fit neatly on the fabric. Measure each part of the piece, including the back, arms, cushions, and skirt, and plan how the pieces will be cut across the width.

Patterned fabrics and stripes need extra, so that the pattern can be lined up across the pieces. Directional fabrics, such as velvets and some prints, must all be cut in the same direction, which adds more waste.

Choose fabric rated for upholstery, which is heavier and more durable than ordinary home decor fabric, and check the abrasion rating when the piece will be used every day. When in doubt, ask an upholsterer to check your measurements before you order.
