Yarn Yardage Formula

Ball bands list a yarn yardage for a given weight. Use that ratio to convert grams of yarn into yards, so you can estimate how much a project leftover or stash skein holds.

Yards = W × (Yᵇ ÷ Wᵇ)

What the terms mean

Symbol Meaning
Yards Yardage you have or need
W Weight of yarn, in grams
Yᵇ Ball-band yardage
Wᵇ Ball-band weight, in grams

Worked example

A ball band reads 220 yards per 100 g. A 60 g leftover holds 60 × (220 ÷ 100) = 132 yards.

Weigh your leftovers. A kitchen scale plus the ball-band ratio is the fastest way to know how much yarn a partial skein holds before starting a project.
