How Far Apart Should Rivets Be?
Rivet spacing is a balance. Pack them too close and you weaken the strip of metal between the holes; spread them too far and the plates gap, buckle or leak between fasteners. The long-standing rule of thumb keeps the pitch — the center-to-center spacing along a row — between about three and six rivet diameters, with the end rivet roughly two diameters from the edge.
From there it is just arithmetic: take the seam length, subtract an edge margin at each end, and divide the remaining span into equal spaces that land inside the 3d–6d band. This calculator does that and tells you how many rivets you need.
Pitch, Edge Distance and Gauge
Pitch is the spacing between rivets along a line. Edge distance is the gap from the center of the end rivet to the edge of the material — too small and the rivet tears out through the edge. Gauge is the spacing between parallel rows, usually around three diameters. Together they set how a multi-row pattern is laid out.
Too Tight, Too Loose
Below 3d the holes crowd each other: the bridge of metal between them can shear, and the heads may physically clash. Above 6d the joint stops behaving as a continuous seam — the unfastened gaps let the plates separate under load and let water or pressure through. Staying in the band keeps the load sharing evenly across every rivet.

What is a typical rivet pitch?
Around 3 to 6 rivet diameters center to center. Four diameters is a common starting point; tighten toward 3d for pressure-tight or weatherproof seams.
How close to the edge can a rivet go?
Keep the center at least about 1.5 to 2 diameters from the edge. Closer than that and the rivet can tear out through the material edge.
How far apart should rows be?
Row spacing (gauge) is typically about 3 diameters. Staggering the rows lets you keep strength up without crowding any single line of holes.
Does spacing depend on plate thickness?
For sealing and to prevent buckling, codes often cap the maximum pitch as a multiple of plate thickness. Treat the 3d-6d band as a starting guide and check the governing standard.
