Planning roadway and highway lighting
Roadway lighting is designed around uniformity, glare control, and the road’s classification rather than a single brightness number. Standards such as ANSI/IES RP-8 set target average luminance or illuminance and uniformity ratios by road type, traffic level, and pedestrian activity. Pole height, spacing, arm length, and the fixture’s photometric distribution work together — taller poles with controlled optics cover more lane width with good uniformity, and spacing is typically expressed as a multiple of mounting height.
The key goals are even light along the carriageway (no dark patches between poles), limited glare for drivers, and minimal light trespass and skyglow, which is why full-cutoff fixtures and warmer color temperatures are increasingly specified. Intersections, merges, and crosswalks get extra attention given their higher conflict and pedestrian risk. Always confirm a layout with a point-by-point photometric calculation against the governing standard.
