Pro tip: For track lights, the standard recommendation is to mount the fixture ≈ 1/3 of the artwork height above the top edge and offset from the wall by 30–60% of the ceiling-to-artwork-top distance. Aim at the center of the artwork using a 30° tilt from vertical for minimal glare.
Placing picture lights
The goal when lighting art is even illumination across the piece with no glare bouncing back at the viewer and no shadow cast by the frame. The classic guideline is to aim the light at roughly a 30° angle from vertical — steeper risks glare and reflections off glass or glossy surfaces, while shallower angles exaggerate canvas texture and frame shadows. For a picture light mounted above the frame, its arm length and height set that angle; for track or recessed fixtures, the wall offset and aim do.
Match the beam width to the piece so the whole work is covered evenly, and use high-CRI light (90+) so colors render faithfully. Keep the fixtures dimmable, since art is often over-lit — a gentle highlight a few times brighter than the room reads as an accent without washing the piece out or fading sensitive media over time.
