How Much Fabric Do I Need

Fabric yardage depends on the pattern pieces, the fabric width, and your size. These rough amounts help you shop before cutting a real layout.

Width changes everything

Wide fabric (54 to 60 in) often needs less length than narrow 44 in cotton, because more pieces fit across. Always check the bolt width before buying.

Add a margin

Add 10 to 15% for shrinkage, cutting mistakes, and squaring up. Directional prints, stripes, and plaids need extra for matching across seams.

Project Approx fabric
Pillow cover (18 in) 0.5 to 1 yd
Tote bag 1 yd
Skirt 1.5 to 2 yd
Adult dress 2.5 to 3.5 yd
Quilt top (throw) 3 to 5 yd
Round up, not down. Running short on fabric mid-project often means a new dye lot or a sold-out bolt. When in doubt, buy a little extra.
