Roast level shapes a coffee flavor as much as its origin. This chart describes the look and taste of each level from light to dark.
| Roast | Appearance | Flavor |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Light brown, dry surface | Bright, acidic, origin character |
| Medium | Medium brown, dry | Balanced, sweet, rounded |
| Medium-dark | Rich brown, light oil | Bold, fuller body, low acidity |
| Dark | Dark brown, oily | Smoky, bittersweet, roast-forward |
FAQ
Is a darker roast always stronger? Not in caffeine or flavor intensity the way people often assume. Darker roasts taste bolder and smokier but can have slightly less caffeine by volume, since roasting reduces bean density and mass. Strong flavor and caffeine content are two different things. Roast names aren’t standardized across roasters, so one company’s medium roast may match another’s light-medium, making bean-specific tasting notes more reliable than roast labels alone.
