Drywall Sizes Chart

Drywall (gypsum board) comes in several thicknesses for different jobs. This chart shows each thickness and where it is used, plus the common sheet sizes.

Thickness Typical use
1/4 in Curved walls, skim over existing surfaces
3/8 in Repairs and double-layer applications
1/2 in Walls and ceilings (most common)
5/8 in Fire-rated (Type X), ceilings, soundproofing
Two to know: 1/2 in is standard for most walls; 5/8 in Type X is required for fire-rated assemblies and resists ceiling sag. Sheets come in 4×8, 4×9, 4×10, and 4×12 ft.
