Tool cost per edge estimates the true cost of each cutting edge from insert price, edges per insert, regrind cost, and number of regrinds, for comparing tooling options or costing a job.
How it works
An indexable insert with multiple usable edges and the option to regrind spreads its purchase price across many cuts, so cost per edge is much lower than the sticker price alone suggests. Comparing cost per edge, not just tool price, is a more accurate way to evaluate whether a pricier premium insert or a cheaper economy insert is the better value for a given job.
FAQ
Is a cheaper insert always the better value? Not necessarily. If a premium insert lasts significantly longer per edge or allows a faster feed and speed, its lower per-part cost in tooling and cycle time combined can outweigh a higher sticker price.
