Choosing pole height for area lighting
Pole height drives how much area each fixture covers and how even the light is. Taller poles light a wider area with fewer fixtures, but the light arrives at a shallower angle, so you need well-controlled optics to keep it on the ground rather than spilling sideways. A common planning rule ties spacing to height: fixtures are often spaced about 3 to 4 times the mounting height apart for general area lighting, tightening that ratio where you need higher uniformity. Typical heights run ~12–15 ft for walkways and small lots, 20–30 ft for parking areas, and 30–40+ ft for large lots on high-mast poles. Taller poles also raise glare and aiming sensitivity, so balance fewer poles against uniformity, maintenance access, and local height limits.
