Practical Notes

Healthcare lighting has to support medical staff, comfort patients, and meet strict requirements, so it differs from ordinary commercial lighting. The calculator uses recommended levels from the IES standard for hospitals and health care facilities, which vary by room, with exam and treatment rooms needing much more light than patient sleeping areas.

Color rendering is especially important, since clinicians judge a patient’s skin color and other signs by eye, so high color rendering lamps are preferred. Glare control matters too, because patients often lie on their backs and look straight at the ceiling, so fixtures should be shielded and the light should be soft. Dimming and separate controls let staff set a suitable level for examinations and for rest at night.

Fixtures in clinical areas need to be easy to clean and may need sealed, gasketed housings, and critical spaces require emergency power. Codes and standards for healthcare buildings are strict and vary by place, so use this calculator as a planning aid and have a qualified lighting designer and engineer confirm the design.
