Midpoint Calculator

ALGEBRA

Find the midpoint of the segment between two points, and how far apart they are. Enter the coordinates.

Midpoint
—
Halfway point.

Usage Tip

The midpoint is equidistant from both endpoints — each is half the total distance away.

THE MATH
midpoint = ((x1 + x2) ÷ 2, (y1 + y2) ÷ 2)
The average of the coordinates
The midpoint is the point exactly halfway between two others, found by averaging their x- and y-coordinates.
It is the center of the segment joining them.
The midpoint coordinates are the averages of the endpoints.
The distance between the two points is also shown.
Works anywhere in the plane.
Practical Notes

The midpoint of a line segment is the point exactly halfway between its two endpoints. Its coordinates are the averages of the endpoint coordinates: the x value is half the sum of the two x values, and the y value is half the sum of the two y values.

The calculator also gives the distance between the points, found with the Pythagorean theorem. The midpoint is used to find the center of a line segment, to split a distance evenly, and to locate the center of a circle when you know the ends of a diameter. If you know one endpoint and the midpoint, you can find the other endpoint by doubling the midpoint and subtracting the known point.
