Fabric comes in standard bolt widths that affect how much yardage a project needs. This chart lists the common ones.

Quilting cotton 42 to 44 in
Apparel cotton 44 to 45 in
Home dec / upholstery 54 in
Muslin 36 to 90 in
Wool suiting 58 to 60 in
Knit fabric 58 to 66 in
Minky / fleece 58 to 60 in
Usable is less than listed. Subtract about 1 to 2 inches for the selvedge edges, which you trim off. Always calculate yardage from the usable width.
