Fabric Weight Chart

Fabric weight, in GSM (grams per square meter), tells you how light or heavy a cloth is. This chart gives typical ranges by fabric type.

Fabric Typical weight
Voile / lawn 70 to 100 GSM
Shirting 100 to 150 GSM
Quilting cotton 140 to 200 GSM
Light canvas 200 to 300 GSM
Fleece 200 to 340 GSM
Denim 300 to 450 GSM
Upholstery 350 to 600 GSM
GSM to ounces. Multiply GSM by 0.0295 for ounces per square yard. 200 GSM quilting cotton is about 5.9 oz/yd².
