How the party beverage calculator works
The calculator multiplies your guest count by the length of the party and an average drinks per hour figure to estimate total drinks, then splits them into alcoholic and non-alcoholic based on the share you set. It also estimates total volume and adds a buffer so you do not run short. Adjust the per hour rate up for a lively crowd or down for a daytime or family event.
How many drinks per guest
A common rule is one drink per guest per hour, with about two in the first hour as people arrive and settle. Over a three hour party that averages roughly one and a half drinks per guest per hour. Heavy drinking events run higher, while brunches and family gatherings run lower, so tune the rate to your crowd.
Splitting alcoholic and non-alcoholic
Plan for a healthy share of non-alcoholic options. Even at adult parties, around a third of drinks are often soft drinks, water, or mocktails, and that share rises for daytime or mixed age events. Always offer plenty of water, which does not count toward the drink total but keeps guests comfortable.
Do not forget ice and water
Ice runs out faster than people expect. Plan for roughly one to one and a half pounds of ice per guest for chilling and serving combined. Set out water alongside the drinks, and chill everything ahead of time so the ice lasts through the event rather than melting just to cool warm bottles.
