Fabric GSM Converter

Convert fabric weight between gsm and oz/yd\u00b2 in either direction.

1 oz/yd\u00b2 = 33.906 gsm.

Practical Notes

Fabric weight is given in two common ways: grams per square meter, called gsm, and ounces per square yard. One ounce per square yard is about 33.9 gsm, so you multiply ounces by 33.9 to get gsm, or divide gsm by 33.9 to get ounces. Choose the direction and enter the value to convert it.

Weight is a useful guide to how a fabric behaves. Light fabrics such as voile and lawn are under about 100 gsm, quilting cotton is often around 120 to 150 gsm, and heavy fabrics such as denim and canvas run from several hundred up. Heavier fabrics are warmer, stiffer, and harder to sew.

Weight is not the same as thickness, and two fabrics of the same weight can feel very different depending on how they are woven or knitted. Some sellers give weight per linear yard of a particular width, which is not the same as per square yard, so check what the number refers to.

Use the weight to compare fabrics from different sellers and to find a good replacement when a fabric is no longer available, together with the fiber content and the look and feel of the cloth.
