How the final grade calculator works
This tool tells you what score you need on your final exam to finish a class with the grade you want. Enter your current grade, how much the final is worth as a percentage of your total grade, and your target overall grade, and it solves for the score you need. It also shows the highest grade you can still reach and the minimum needed to pass.
The formula
The math is straightforward: your final grade is your current grade times the portion that is not the final, plus your final score times the final weight. Rearranged, the needed final score equals your target minus your current grade times one minus the weight, all divided by the weight. The calculator handles this for you and flags when a target is out of reach.
When a target is not reachable
If the needed score comes out above 100 percent, the target is not achievable with this final alone, and the tool tells you the maximum you can still earn. If it comes out at or below zero, you have already secured that grade no matter how the final goes. Either way you learn exactly where you stand before exam day.
Using it to plan
Try a few target grades to see the trade offs, and check the pass line so you know your floor. Remember the weight should reflect the final exam only; if your syllabus groups the final with other end of term work, use the combined weight and treat the needed score as an average across those items.
Frequently asked questions
What do I need on my final to get an A? Set your desired grade to 90, enter your current grade and the final weight, and the tool shows the needed score.
What if it says over 100 percent? The target is not reachable with the final alone; the max possible figure shows your ceiling.
Can I already pass without the final? If the needed to pass figure is zero or negative, yes.
