Mechanical Force Calculator

Eight ways force actually shows up — Newton’s second law, weight, pressure, torque on a lever, friction, centripetal, spring, and impact — each answered in newtons, pounds-force and kilograms-force at once.

Force

Force, the Way It Actually Comes Up

Force is a push or a pull, measured in newtons (N) in SI or pounds-force (lbf) in imperial. The catch is that it reaches you in many disguises — a mass accelerating, a weight under gravity, pressure on an area, a torque on a lever, friction, a turning mass, a compressed spring, or an impact. This suite covers all eight and reports every answer in N, lbf and kgf at once.

F = m × a

Newton’s second law is the backbone: force equals mass times acceleration. Every other form is a special case or a rearrangement.

The Eight Force Types

TypeFormula
Newton’s 2nd lawF = m a
Weight (gravity)F = m g
PressureF = P A
Torque on a leverF = T / r
FrictionF = μ N
CentripetalF = m v² / r
Spring (Hooke)F = k x
Impact (energy)F = m g h / d

Notes That Trip People Up

Weight is a force, mass is not. A 10 kg mass has a weight of about 98 N on Earth but only 16 N on the Moon — same mass, different force, which is why this tool lets you pick the gravity.

Impact force depends on stopping distance. The same falling object produces a huge force when it stops in a millimeter and a gentle one when it stops over a long crush distance. That single input dominates the result, which is the whole point of crumple zones and padding.

Where It Comes Up

  • Machine design — actuator and clamping forces from pressure or torque.
  • Statics & structures — reactions and applied loads.
  • Motion & vehicles — acceleration, friction and cornering (centripetal) forces.
  • Springs & mechanisms — preload and return forces.
  • Safety & drop testing — impact forces and the stopping distance that tames them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a kilogram-force?

It is the force one kilogram of mass exerts under standard gravity — 1 kgf = 9.80665 N = about 2.205 lbf. It is handy when you want a force expressed in familiar mass units.

Why convert everything to SI?

Mixing units is the most common source of force errors. The calculator converts your inputs to SI, computes once, then presents the result in all three force units so you can use whichever your work needs.

Is the impact force exact?

No — it is the average force using the energy method (force times stopping distance equals the energy absorbed). Real peak forces depend on how the material decelerates and are usually higher.

Results are for education and preliminary design. Impact and dynamic loads in particular require careful analysis of real material behaviour and safety factors before use in any critical application.
