Find the area, perimeter, and diagonal of a square. Enter the side length.
Usage Tip
To double a square’s area, multiply the side by the square root of 2, not by 2.
diagonal = side × √2
Its diagonal is always the side length times the square root of 2 (about 1.414).
The diagonal is about 1.414 times the side.
All four sides and angles are equal.
A square has four equal sides and four right angles. The area is the side length squared, the perimeter is four times the side length, and the diagonal is the side length times the square root of two, about 1.414 times the side.
The diagonal is always longer than the side, and it splits the square into two equal right triangles. Doubling the side length multiplies the area by four. When you know the area and need the side, take the square root of the area. These calculations are useful for floor tile layouts, plots of land, and checking that a frame or panel is square by comparing its two diagonals.
