Sewing looks intimidating, but a handful of basics will get you making real projects fast. Here is what you need and how to start.
What you need
A basic sewing machine, all-purpose polyester thread, a pack of universal needles, sharp fabric scissors, pins, a seam ripper, and a measuring tape cover almost everything a beginner sews. Start with stable woven cotton, which is forgiving to handle.
Your first steps
Learn to thread the machine and wind a bobbin, then practice straight and zigzag stitches on scrap fabric. Sew accurate seam allowances by lining the fabric edge up with the guide on the needle plate.
A good first project
A simple pillow cover or tote bag uses straight seams only and finishes quickly, building confidence before you tackle zippers, curves, or garments.
