Find the volume, surface area, and space diagonal of a cube. Enter the edge length.
Usage Tip
The space diagonal (corner to corner) is longer than a face diagonal: edge times root 3 versus root 2.
space diagonal = edge × √3
The space diagonal runs from one corner to the opposite corner through the interior.
The space diagonal is the edge times the square root of 3 (about 1.732).
All edges and faces are equal.
A cube has six identical square faces. The volume is the edge length cubed, the surface area is six times the edge length squared, and the space diagonal, the line from one corner to the opposite corner through the inside, is the edge length times the square root of three.
Doubling the edge length multiplies the surface area by four and the volume by eight, which is why larger objects have proportionally less surface area for their volume. The face diagonal is a different, shorter line equal to the edge times the square root of two. The space diagonal tells you the longest straight object that fits inside a cubic box.
