Knurling calculator finds the whole number of knurl teeth that fit a part’s circumference at a given diametral pitch, and the adjusted blank diameter that makes the fit exact.
How it works
Knurl wheels cut at a fixed pitch, so the circumference of the part must divide evenly into a whole number of teeth for the pattern to close up cleanly without a mismatched seam. Since most stock comes in fixed diameters, this calculator back-solves for the nearest blank diameter that yields a whole tooth count at your knurl’s pitch.
FAQ
What happens if I knurl at the wrong diameter? The knurl pattern won’t close evenly. You’ll get a visible seam or mismatched teeth where the pattern wraps back around, which is most noticeable on fine-pitch straight knurls.
