DIY Project Budget Calculator

Build a DIY project budget. Add up materials, tools and rentals, permits, and a contingency to see your total.

materialstoolsmaterials + tools + permits + contingency
Total DIY Budget
All costs plus contingency.

Usage Tip

Price out the whole materials list before starting, not as you go — running totals prevent the slow creep that blows DIY budgets. Rent specialty tools you will use only once.

THE MATH
Subtotal = materials + tools/rentals + permits + other
Contingency = subtotal × contingency%
Total = subtotal + contingency
A DIY budget skips contractor labor but still needs materials, tool purchases or rentals, permits, and a cushion for mistakes and re-buys.
Contingency matters more for DIY than for pros — learning on the job means more waste and do-overs.
Budget for tools you do not own yet — buy if you will reuse them, rent if it is a one-time job.
First-time DIY almost always costs more than the bare materials: wasted cuts, wrong parts, and a second trip to the store add up.
Keep 15 to 20% contingency; it is not padding, it is the difference between finishing and stalling.
