Practical Notes

Smart lighting controls reduce energy use by turning lights off when they are not needed, dimming them when full output is not required, and following schedules. The calculator estimates the annual savings and the payback period from the number of fixtures, the wattage, the hours of use, and the price of electricity, together with the controls you select.

A simple example shows the scale. One hundred fixtures of 40 watts running for 12 hours a day use about 17,500 kilowatt hours a year, so a 25 percent saving would be about 4,400 kilowatt hours. The payback is the cost of the controls divided by the annual savings, and it is shorter where the lights run for long hours or electricity is expensive.

Savings from different controls do not simply add up, because they overlap. For example, a dimmed light that is also turned off by a sensor saves less than the two together suggest. Allow for commissioning and maintenance, check that the wireless system is reliable, and include the benefits that are harder to count, such as better comfort and data on how the building is used.
