Work out how many parts a length of bar stock will yield once facing and parting allowances are accounted for, plus the leftover remnant.
Parts per bar = floor((bar length – facing allowance) / (part length + parting width)). Remnant = what is left after that many parts are cut.
How it works
Every part consumes its own length plus the width of metal lost to the parting tool, and the very first face cut takes a small allowance off the end of the bar. Dividing total usable length by that per-part consumption gives a real part count instead of an optimistic estimate that ignores kerf loss.
FAQ
Should I count the remnant as a usable part? Only if it is long enough to safely hold in the chuck or collet with enough material left to face and part off again.
