Espresso Roast Guide

Espresso roast is not a separate bean but a roast style tuned for espresso: usually medium-dark, developed for body, sweetness, and a rich crema under pressure.

Property Detail
Roast level Medium-dark to dark
Acidity Low to moderate
Body Full, syrupy
Crema Rich, lasting
Flavor Caramel, chocolate, roast
Best for Espresso machines, moka pot

Roasted for pressure

Espresso forces hot water through finely ground coffee under pressure, concentrating everything. A slightly darker, fully developed roast keeps the result sweet and balanced rather than sharp, and produces the crema espresso is known for.

Any bean can be espresso. Lighter espresso roasts are popular in specialty cafes, but they demand precise dialing. A classic espresso roast is more forgiving at home.
