Choosing the Right Yarn

Picking yarn means matching fiber and weight to the project. The right choice makes a piece behave the way the pattern intends.

Fiber by project

Wool is warm, elastic, and forgiving, ideal for garments. Cotton is cool and sturdy for household items and summer wear. Acrylic is affordable and machine washable for blankets and gifts.

Substituting safely

To swap a yarn, match the weight and check the gauge listed on the ball band. Then knit a swatch, since fiber and twist change how a yarn behaves even at the same weight.

Always match gauge. A substitute yarn must hit the patterns gauge or the finished size will be off. Swatch with your chosen yarn before committing.
