Bias Tape Formula

Bias tape is cut diagonally so it stretches around curves. A square of fabric yields a surprising length of continuous bias strip.

Length = A ÷ Wᵒ

What the terms mean

Symbol Meaning
Length Total bias length, in inches
A Fabric area, in square inches
Wᵒ Strip width, in inches

Worked example

An 18 by 18 in square is 324 in². Cut into 2 in strips it yields 324 ÷ 2 = 162 inches of bias tape.

Continuous bias saves fabric. The continuous-loop method turns a single square into one long strip with far less waste than cutting separate diagonal pieces.
