The number of fixtures for a sports field is worked out from the target illuminance, the area, and the light output of each fixture, with allowances for how much reaches the playing surface and how much the output falls as the system ages. Targets rise with the level of play, from about 200 to 300 lux for recreational use to 500 lux or more for competition.
The count is only the start. Even coverage depends on where the poles stand, how high the fixtures are mounted, and how each one is aimed. Uniformity is as important as the average level, so a calculation of the average should be followed by photometric modeling to check the minimum and maximum levels on the field.
Control glare for players and neighbors by choosing fixtures with good shielding and aiming them carefully. LED sports lighting turns on instantly and can be dimmed, which allows a lower level for practice and a higher level for games. Confirm the design against the standard for your sport and with the local rules on light spill, and have a lighting designer verify it.
