How the payload calculator works

Payload is everything your truck carries on top of its own empty weight — people, cargo, and the tongue weight of any trailer. Your ceiling is GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) minus the curb weight. Enter those plus what you are loading and the calculator shows how much payload you have left and whether you are within the limit.

What counts as payload

  • Passengers — everyone in the cab, not just the driver.
  • Cargo — anything in the bed, cabin, bed cap, or toolboxes.
  • Tongue weight — the 10 to 15% of a trailer’s weight that presses down on the hitch. This is the one most people forget, and it is often the biggest single chunk.
  • Accessories — a topper, bed liner, or aftermarket bumper all eat into payload too.

Payload vs towing capacity

These are two separate limits. Towing capacity is the combined truck-plus-trailer ceiling; payload is what rides in the truck. A half-ton can be rated to tow 10,000 lb yet only carry 1,500 lb of payload — and a heavy trailer’s tongue weight can use most of that before any passengers climb in. Always check both. Use the Towing Capacity Calculator for the trailer side.

How to find your real payload number

Look for the yellow sticker on the driver door jamb that reads, the combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed a stated figure. That number is your actual payload as the truck was built, including any factory options — more accurate than GVWR minus a generic curb weight.

Frequently asked questions

Does tongue weight really count against payload?

Yes. The hitch transfers the trailer’s tongue load onto the truck’s rear axle, so it counts fully against payload and GVWR even though it is not sitting in the bed.

What happens if I exceed payload?

You overload the axle, tires, and brakes, handling suffers, and you may void warranty coverage. Move weight to the trailer, drop cargo, or use a vehicle with a higher GVWR.

Is payload the same as bed capacity?

No. Payload covers the whole truck — cab and bed together, plus tongue weight — not just what the bed can physically hold.
