How the exam score calculator works

Enter the points you earned and the total points available, plus any bonus or curve points, and the tool returns your percentage and letter grade. It is the fast way to turn a raw score like 42 out of 50 into a clear percentage and grade, and to see how far you are from the next letter up.

Percentage and letter grades

Your percentage is the points earned plus any bonus, divided by the total, times one hundred. The letter grade uses the common scale where 90 and above is an A, 80s a B, 70s a C, 60s a D, and below 60 an F. Your school may use pluses and minuses or a different cutoff, so adjust if needed.

Bonus and curve points

Add extra credit or a flat curve in the bonus field and the percentage updates instantly. This lets you see whether a few bonus points bump you to the next grade, which is often the difference between a high B and a low A on a tight exam.

Using your score to plan

The points short of an A figure shows exactly how many more points you would have needed for ninety percent, which is useful when deciding whether to ask about regrades or extra credit. Combine it with the final grade calculator to see how this exam affects your overall standing in the class.
