Mean Median Mode Calculator

STATISTICS & PROBABILITY

Find the mean, median, mode, and range of a data set at once. Enter the numbers separated by commas.

Mean
—
The average.

Usage Tip

When data is skewed by outliers, the median often describes the center better than the mean.

THE MATH
mean = sum ÷ count; median = middle value
mode = most frequent value
These are the three measures of central tendency. The mean is the average, the median is the middle, and the mode is the most common value.
Together they describe the center of a data set.
Enter one or more numbers separated by commas.
An even count averages the two middle values for the median.
A data set can have no mode, one mode, or several.
Practical Notes

The mean, median, mode, and range each describe a data set in a different way. The mean is the sum divided by the count, the median is the middle value once sorted, the mode is the most frequent value, and the range is the largest value minus the smallest.

When a data set has a few extreme values, the median is often a better description of a typical value than the mean, which gets pulled toward the extremes. A set can have more than one mode if several values tie for most frequent, or no mode if every value appears once. Comparing the mean and median also gives a quick clue about skew.
