Shipping Cost Estimator

Estimate a parcel shipping charge by weight.

A rough estimate \u2014 carriers also price by box size and distance.

Practical Notes

Shipping cost is usually the weight multiplied by a rate per pound, plus a base or handling fee. This calculator gives a quick estimate so you can price an item or decide whether free shipping makes sense. Real carrier prices depend on the service, the distance, and the destination zone, so compare rates before you commit.

Carriers often round the weight up to the next whole pound, and for larger or lightweight packages they may charge by size, called dimensional weight, rather than actual weight. A bulky box of yarn or fabric can cost more to send than its weight suggests, so use the smallest box that protects the contents.

If you sell handmade items, remember to include the cost of packaging materials, labels, and your time as well as the postage. Tracking and insurance protect you and the customer if a parcel is lost or damaged, and it helps to weigh a typical package on a kitchen or postal scale before you list the price.

Worked Example

For example, a 2 pound parcel at 4.50 per pound with a 3.00 handling fee costs 12.00 to send. Rates per pound often fall for heavier parcels and rise for faster services, so check the current price for the exact service you plan to use.
