Why production rate matters
Knowing how many parts a machine can actually produce in a shift, not just in theory, is the difference between a quote that makes money and one that loses it. A cycle time from a program sheet assumes the machine runs continuously with no tool changes, no material handling, and no operator delays. Real shop floors never hit that number, which is why efficiency is built into this calculation instead of treated as an afterthought.
How the numbers are calculated
Parts per hour comes from dividing 60 minutes by the cycle time per part, then multiplying by your efficiency percentage to account for real-world downtime, tool changes, and load and unload time. Parts per shift simply extends that hourly rate across the length of your shift. A machine with a 2-minute cycle time running at 100 percent efficiency would produce 30 parts an hour, but at a more realistic 75 percent efficiency it produces closer to 22 or 23.
Tracking efficiency over time
Efficiency is not a fixed number. It drifts with tool wear, fixture condition, operator experience, and how well setups are staged ahead of time. Many shops track actual parts produced against the theoretical maximum each shift and use that ratio as their efficiency input here, which keeps quotes and capacity planning grounded in what the machine really does rather than what the program says it should do.
