Constant Surface Speed Calculator

LATHE

Constant surface speed (CSS) calculates the spindle RPM needed to hold a target SFM at the current stock diameter, capped at a maximum RPM limit to protect the workholding and spindle.

How it works

As a facing or taper cut moves toward center, diameter shrinks and the RPM needed to hold constant SFM rises quickly; without a cap, this can spike well beyond a safe chuck speed near the centerline. Most CNC lathe controls (G96 with a G50/G92 RPM limit) apply exactly this kind of ceiling automatically.

FAQ

What RPM limit should I set? Use the lowest of your chuck manufacturer’s rated speed for the current workholding grip, your machine’s max spindle RPM, and any speed limit needed for part balance or overhang, whichever is most restrictive.
