Batch Brewing Formula

Brewing for a crowd means scaling your ratio up to a large volume. This formula finds the total coffee for any number of cups.

Coffee (g) = (Cups × Size) ÷ Ratio

What the terms mean

Symbol Meaning
Coffee Total coffee, in grams
Cups Number of cups
Size Cup size, in ml
Ratio Water-to-coffee ratio

Worked example

For 12 cups of 240 ml at a 1:16 ratio: (12 × 240) ÷ 16 = 180 g of coffee, with about 2,880 ml of water.

Account for absorption. Grounds soak up roughly 2 ml of water per gram, so a large batch yields a little less liquid than the water you added. Add a touch extra for big batches.
