Foundation stitches = width times (stitches per 4 in, divided by 4). Rows = length times (rows per 4 in, divided by 4).

How it works

Crochet gauge is your stitches and rows across 4 inches. Multiply the desired width by the stitches per inch to size the foundation chain, and the desired length by the rows per inch for the row count. Add a turning chain as your stitch requires.

Count the foundation. The foundation chain sets the width of the whole piece. Count it carefully, and remember some stitches need extra chains for the turning chain.
